How to manually configure Windows 98 Dial up Networking
This document assumes that you already have another dial up Internet connection with another provider and that Dial Up Networking and the TCP/IP Protocol are installed on your computer.
If you do not already have another dial up Internet connection on your system you are advised to download the customised configuration program here.
This document will help you manually configure Windows 98 to connect to RYA Online using Dial-Up Networking. Please read the entire document before attempting to connect.
Creating and configuring a dial up connection to RYA Online
To configure a dial up network connection to RYA Online, double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and launch Dial-Up Networking (Fig 1).

Double click on the Make New Connection icon to create a dial up icon for accessing RYA Online (Fig 2).

This will open a setup wizard for adding a new dial up icon, simply follow the instructions on screen and key in the following details.
1) Type a name for the computer you are dialing. Set this to RYA Online.
2) Select a Modem: If you know your modem make, click on the downward arrow and select your modem from the list provided.
Click on the Next button.
Enter the following:
1) Area code: 0845
2) Telephone number: 028 8899
3) Country code: Click on downward arrow and select United Kingdom (44) from the list.
Note: Please note that to access RYA Online's system you must have Caller Line Identification (CLI) turned on. (If you have this turned off by default on your phone, you can temporarily turn it on when dialling RYA Online's system by adding the code 1470 before the number to dial.) To do that set the following:
1) Area code: 1470
2) Telephone number: 0845 028 8899
3) Country code: Click on downward arrow and select United Kingdom (44) from the list.
Click on the Next button, and then on the Finish button.
You will now see a new icon in the Dial-up Networking box (Fig 3).

You now have to add in some additional settings, so click on the RYA Online icon to highlight it, then right click with your mouse and select Properties from the menu. You will be presented with the following: (Fig 4)

Check that the details in (Fig 4) are correct (If you have CLI turned off on your telephone by default it will instead be Area Code 1470 and Telephone number 0845 028 8899.) Click the Use country code and area code box.
You now need to setup the Network protocol details before you can connect.
Click on the Server Types tab (see Fig 5):

Enter the following settings:
1) Type of Dial-up Server: In the drop down box find PPP: Windows 98, Windows NT, Internet
2) Advanced options: Check Enable software compression
3) Allowed network protocols: Check TCP/IP
Click on the TCP/IP Settings button (see Fig 5 above) and you will see the following screen:

Enter the following details:
1) Server assigned IP address: Check the box.
2) Specify name server addresses: Check the box.
3) Primary DNS: 195.26.232.1
4) Secondary DNS: 195.26.232.2
5) Use IP header compression: Check the box.
6) Use default gateway on remote network: Check the box.
Click the Ok button until you arrive back at the Dial-Up Networking screen (Fig 3)
To use, double click on the RYA Online icon to open the connection, and enter the following details (see Fig 7).
1) User Name: RYA Online
2) Password: Leave this blank

Click on the Connect button. You will see the following progress box.

The status will change from Dialing to Connecting and finally Verifying User name and Password. You should end up with the following connection box:

You are now connected; you can use your internet software to access the World Wide Web, email, Newsgroups and download files via FTP.
